The Royal Commission delivered a scathing interim report in October 2019 that described Australia’s aged care system as ‘sad and shocking’, with many problems including widespread abuse, overprescription of sedatives and antipsychotics, and young people with disabilities being stuck in the system with little freedom of choice.
The non-compliance checker on myagedcare.gov.au allows people to search for individual sanctions and notices of non-compliance against aged care providers, but it doesn’t provide a great overview of the problem. We used the data from this site to create the interactive map above. Click on the dots to see details and links to the My Aged Care site.
The My Aged Care non-compliance checker does not include notices of non-compliance that are more than two years old. Some sanctions and non-compliance notifications that have been issued and later reconsidered are also not published online, according to a statement provided to The Conversation by Ms Janet Anderson PSM, Aged Care Quality and Safety Commissioner.
The final report of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety is due to be handed down in April 2020.
